In the 1950s, a generation of designers in Basel and Zurich — Josef Müller-Brockmann, Armin Hofmann, Emil Ruder, Max Bill — set out to make graphic design behave like architecture. Asymmetric grids instead of decoration. Photography instead of illustration. One sans-serif typeface, used confidently, allowed to do its job without ornament. They named it the International Typographic Style; the rest of the world has called it Swiss ever since.

It was practical work to begin with — concert programmes, railway posters, exhibition catalogues — and it spread because it travels well. A Swiss-style poster from 1958 still reads cleanly on a wall today. The grid is the same one your phone uses to lay out an app. The typefaces — Helvetica, Univers, Akzidenz-Grotesk — are the ones your operating system defaults to. The look isn't dated because it was built on first principles, not on fashion.
